General Program Description

Langston University is a historically black college/university located in Langston, Oklahoma located 60 miles north of Oklahoma City. The Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree program is a post baccalaureate three-year full-time course of study. Langton University DPT program seeks to increase the number of minority physical therapists committed to serving the underserved and working to reduce or eliminate minority health and health disparities. The DPT program enrolled the charter class in 2002 and graduated the first cohort in May 2005. The DPT program has graduated a class each year since 2005. In May 2010 the DPT program was re-affirmed accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Physical Therapist Education for 10 years. Clinical Experiences
Langston University DPT program requires each studen to complete 40 weeks of full-time clinical education in a variety of health care settings that provide physical therapy services. Students are required to complete clinical education in the physical therapy management of persons with musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiopulmonary, and integumentary impairments. The opportunity to complete clinical education within specialty areas such as geriatrics, pediatrics, sports medicine, and health promotion and wellness is provided to the students. Clinical education is provided in the state of Oklahoma and neighboring states of the region. Students work directly with the Director of Clinical Education to select sites that meet the academic needs and support a holistic approach to developing as a doctoring professional in physical therapy.

Enrollment
Langston University enrolls 14 students in each class. Selection and admissions is completed in April of each year. The entering class of 14 students is oriented each year in June and classess begin in July.

Admission
Applicants must have completed requirements for a baccalaureate degree at an accredited college or university with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0 in which 4.0 is equivalent to an “A”. The DPT Program specified prerequisite courses must be completed with a “C” or better grade in each course and an overall GPA of 2.5 for the prerequisite courses. Prerequisite courses must have been completed within the last 10 years. Doctor of Physical Therapy Program Application Procedures Submit a completed application for admission to the School of Physical Therapy, Doctor of Physical Therapy Program (DPT). Submit requests for official undergraduate and graduate transcript(s) to be sent directly from each institution attended to the School of Physical Therapy at Langston University. Official transcripts will be evaluated to identify compliance with prerequisite courses needed for the DPT admissions process. Submit three recommendations from academic advisors or individuals who can address the potential for success of the applicant. Sealed recommendations are mailed directly to the School of Physical Therapy using the forms provided. Submit an autobiographical statement of no less than 500 words (and no more than 1000 words) following guidelines on the “Autobiographical Statement” form. Submit scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) directly to the School of Physical Therapy. All applicants are required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). (Although the DPT program does not specify a minimum score requirement on the GRE, it is recommended that applicants score in the 50th percentile or better for each of the areas assessed by the GRE. GRE scores should date no longer than 5 years prior to date of application.) Submit documentation of 50 clinical observation hours with a licensed physical therapist. Request official undergraduate transcript from the baccalaureate degree conferring institution to be mailed directly to the School of Physical Therapy. Confirmation of baccalaureate degree must be received prior to enrollment in the DPT program. Attach a non-refundable application fee of ($50.00) for in-state applicants and ($75.00) for out-of-state. Upon receipt of the completed application and required documents qualified applicants will be notified of a date and time for an interview with the School of Physical Therapy Selection and Admissions Committee Members. Compliance with medical information and other Langston University requirements must be met prior to enrollment in the School of Physical Therapy DPT program of study. Graduates of the program support the physical therapy needs of the state of Oklahoma and the border communities of the neighboring states: Arkansas, Texas and New Mexico.

Tuition, fees and financial aid
These tuition rates are subject to change based on mandates by the State Regents. The cost of books varies per semester but on average it ranges between $500—$1,200. Student life
Langston University is located in a rural setting. There is an active student government association, collegiate sports and student activities occur on the campus. The DPT students reside on and off campus. Neighboring communities include: Stillwater, Oklahoma; Edmond, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma City, OK. Students commute to Langston University from each of these communities.
