General Program Description
The physical therapy program is a 100-credit curriculum, completed over 3 years in a full-time day format; except for the last year, which may include weekend coursework. The facilities include faculty office, classrooms, skills and research laboratories, biomechanics lab, research lab, and medical library. The Old Westbury campus includes the osteopathic medical school and three libraries. The program also offers a dual Bachelor in Life Science/Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree in a 3+3 model. Clinical Experiences
All physical therapy students participate in three 8-week and one 12-week long full-time clinical education rotations during the program.
Faculty
There are nine full-time and 10 part-time faculty members. Of full-time faculty members 100% hold post-professional doctoral degrees; four faculty members are certified as clinical specialists; and all faculty members are engaged in clinical practice and research. The faculty has published sixteen articles in peer-reviewed journals in the past two years. Faculty is actively involved in presenting research at local, state and national conferences. All faculty are pursuing scholarly activities.
Enrollment
New York Institute of Technology is a private, independent senior comprehensive college offering undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees, educating approximately 10,000 students through eight academic schools. The Physical Therapy Graduate Program has a maximal enrollment of 40 students per class.
Admission
The suggested deadline for admission materials is December 16. High school students can apply for the dual degree program. Generally, to be competitive, applicants should have a GPA of at least 3.0 and proof of 100 hours of volunteer time, although 300 is recommended for entry to the professional phase. The required prerequisites for students with a Bachelor’s Degree are: two courses in chemistry with lab, two courses in physics with lab, two courses in biology with lab, one course in general/intro psychology, one course in another psychology, one course in college algebra and trigonometry, one course in statistics, and one course in human or mammalian physiology with lab. The average student entering our program is representative of the diverse population within the metropolitan area. Our website includes more detailed information about the admission process. All applications for direct entry into the professional phase must submit their materials through PTCAS.
Outcomes
NYIT has graduated 13 classes of DPT students. Our class of 2009, 2011 and 2012 has achieved a 100% pass rate on the National Licensing examination.
Tuition, fees and financial aid
Graduate tuition is $1050 per credit. Financial aid and scholarships can be obtained from the college’s Office of Financial Aid at 516/686-7680.
Student life
An on-campus dormitory is available at the SUNY Old Westbury campus about 10 minutes away. Free shuttle bus service is available between the main campus (Old Westbury) and the dormitories. Prerequisites can also be taken at our Manhattan Campus located in Columbus Circle.
