General Program Description

The Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) is offered by the College of Staten Island of the City University of New York (CUNY). All courses and facilities are located at the College of Staten Island, except for the human anatomy course which takes place at Hunter College Anatomy Lab. The facilities include three dedicated clinical performance research laboratories, departmental student resource center, two fully equipped clinical teaching labs , a modern library and a complete gymnasium and fitness center with various support and counseling services. The first class of DPT students started the 2006 spring semester. The college is located on a beautiful park- like campus. Parking facilites are available throughout the campus. The program admits students for the fall semester. Dormitories are available starting for the 2013 fall semester.

Clinical Experiences
There are 34 weeks of full-time clinical internships. Students participate in one 6-week and one 10- week experiences during the second year and two 9-week experiences during the third year. Clinical sites are located throughout the United States. Students are placed in a variety of setting and provide excellent clinical experiences.

Faculty
There are seven full-time and 22 part-time adjunct faculty members. Over the past 3 years, the faculty has averaged 8 publications in peer-reviewed journals each year. The core faculty to student ratio is 1:9. The faculty have received major grant awards totaling over 2 million dollars for research primarily in the prevention and treatment of spinal cord injuries.

Enrollment
The College of Staten Island is a comprehensive senior college of the City University of New York. There are more than 14,000 students enrolled part- and full-time. The physical therapy program accepts 20 students into the first year of the professional phase of the program.

Admission
All students must apply through the Graduate Admissions Office (www.csi.cuny.edu/admissions). Students must complete a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited four-year institution by the end of the semester prior to entry. Pre-requisite courses include two semesters of Human Anatomy and Physiology for science majors, with labs (Students must take A&P at the same institution within the past 10 years); two semesters of Physics for science majors, with lab; two semesters of General Chemistry for science majors, with lab; two semesters of Psychology (including one semester of developmental psychology or child psychology); one semester of Mathematics (precalculus or college algebra and trigonometry); one semester of Statistics (we recommend a course that includes computer applications). For applicants who have not studied in English-speaking countries, a score of at least 550 (paper version) and 213 (computer version) on the TOEFL examination; documented clinical experience of at least 100 hours in the United States under the supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist, with a minimum of fifty hours in a hospital-based setting and a total of fifty hours in one or more different practice settings (e.g., private practice, nursing home, pediatric or school setting, outpatient setting). All prerequisite requirements must be met prior to the starting date of the program in which the applicant is seeking admission. An undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 calculated from all college courses is required. Students must take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), www.ets.org/GRE.

Outcomes
For the 2012, 2013 and 2014 graduates: 100% of admitted students graduated from the program (3 year average); the ultimate passing rate on the licensing exam was 94.7% ( 3 year average); 100% of graduates who sought employment were employed as physical therapists within six months of passing the licensing exam.

Tuition, fees and financial aid
The CUNY Board of Trustees determines tuition for all CUNY colleges. Tuition is based upon resident status. Tuition for the Fall, 2014 for the DPT class of 2017 is $5200 for NYS residents and $940/credit for Non-NYS residents. NYS residents pay a set full-time tuition for the Fall and Spring semesters and a part time $595 per credit fee in the summer. Non-NYS residents pay the per credit fee for each semester. The tuition rates are subject to change without prior notice and are for estimation only. There are additional non-instruction and student-activity fees.

Student life
The College of Staten Island of the City University of New York offers programs in liberal arts and sciences, professional studies, health sciences and the technologies. Completed in 1994, the 204-acre campus of CSI/CUNY provides an advanced educational environment and is the largest site for a college in New York City. Set in a park-like landscape, the campus is centrally located on the Island.
