General Program Description

The Indian Hills Physical Therapist Assistant Program is a 21 month program. Students may enroll in the program only at the beginning of the Fall Term. Graduates recieve an Associate of Applied Science degree and are eligible to take the National Physical Therapy Examination for PTA licensure. The Physical Therapist Assistant Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education of the American Physical Therapy Association.

Clinical Experiences
Clinical education is integrated throughout the 21 month, 7 term program as outlined below: CLINICAL — WEEKS — HOURS Clinical I — One day each week for 10 weeks — 80 hours Clinical II — Five days a week for 2 weeks — 80 Hours Clinical III — Five days a week for 4 weeks — 160 Hours Clinical IV A — Five days a week for 5 weeks — 200 Hours Clinical IV B — Five days a week for 5 weeks — 200 Hours TOTAL: — 18 Weeks — 720 Hours Clinical sites are located in a variety of settings throughout Southeast and Central Iowa.

Faculty
There are two full-time core faculty members, and one adjunct online instructor. The faculty to student ratio is 1:16.

Enrollment
Enrollment for Indian Hills Community College is approximately 5,000. The Physical Therapist Assistant program accepts up to 40 students each fall.

Admission
Requirements for admission to the IHCC PTA program include: 1. Online IHCC application form at www.indianhills.edu 2. Official high school transcript or records of your General Equivalency Diploma scores. 3. Transcript of all college work done prior to entering IHCC. 4. COMPASS, ACT or SAT 5. Forty hours of observation in a physical therapy clinic 6. Applicants must meet minimum grade point and test scores to be accepted into the program. Complete applicants are screened beginning in October of each year and accepted until the program is full. 100% of qualified applicants are admitted to the program (3-year average).

Outcomes
100% of the program graduates who sought employment are working in the profession (3 year average), 82% of the graduates passed the licensure exam(3 year average) 70% of admitted students graduate from the program(3 year average)

Student life
Indian Hills has beautiful campuses in Centerville and Ottumwa Iowa. There are also eight education centers located in the county seat communities served by the college. The PTA program is based on the Ottumwa campus with classrooms and laboratory space in the Rural Health Education Center, constructed in 2007. Indian Hills has a 4 day week with classes meeting Monday through Thursday. Students attending the college are provided assistance in securing housing. Information regarding apartments may be obtained through the IHCC Housing Office located in the Bennett Student Services Center. There are also five dormitories located on the Ottumwa campus, each within a short walking distance from student classrooms. Students have access to health care through the IHCC Student Health Services, located on the first floor of Trustee Hall. The facility is staffed by an advanced registered nurse practitioner, who works in collaboration with an area physician. The Early Childhood Development and Day Care Center at IHCC is dedicated to providing appropriate early childhood education and quality child care services to children ages 3 weeks through 12 years. Parents select a weekly schedule based on the hours and days care is needed. The center is located near Trustee Hall on the Ottumwa Campus. In keeping with the philosophy of the college, extracurricular activities are designed to provide an environment conducive to student growth. Planned programs provide for experiences that lend enrichment to career-oriented activities and assist in the development of social skills and social responsibility. Co-curricular activities, such as athletics, dances, concerts, clubs, film series, drama groups and field trips, provide a meaningful complement to academic program.
